The folk art of penny "ruggs" has not been forgotten as witnessed by this gorgeous Dogwood Table Mat that measures 13 1/2" x 19". In the 1800's, starting around the time of the Civil War, thrifty homemakers would use scraps of wool or felted wool, often hand dyed, to create functional and decorative pieces for the home. Designs taken from nature, and using the penny as a template for the circles the craft was "coined" Penny "Rugg". It was spelled with two "g's" to differentiate it from the rug that went on the floor.
This Dogwood Penny Rug design was meticulously hand-stitched using hand dyed wools.
